Jesse Marsch told Thursday’s press conference – as per the club’s YouTube channel – that Crysencio Summerville can play in a midfield three for Leeds United when the Whites field a 4-3-3 system, ahead of Friday’s clash against Villa.
Summerville, 21, has come into the Leeds side of late and been in wonderful form. Starting five of the last six Premier League games, Summerville has clocked up four goals and laid on an assist. But he has now suffered an ankle issue.
He limped off early on against Cardiff City on Sunday – during the 2-2 draw with the Championship side. Now, Marsch has confirmed that the young Dutch winger will be sidelined for another month. But did make a surprise suggestion.
Asked if after the injuries to Adam Forshaw and the departure of Mateusz Klich, he is happy with his midfield options – Marsch responded. The Leeds boss told his press conference that in a 4-3-3 system, Summerville can play in midfield.
“The 4-3-3, in that midfield three you can also use Brenden, Jack, we can use Cree in that position a little bit because what we ask of it can be different with and without the ball. We are evaluating if we can add to that in the future.”
Marsch: Summerville can play in a midfield three for Leeds in 4-3-3
Summerville has been superb for Leeds out wide. But the suggestion that he can play in a midfield three is intriguing. Not least, because you would suggest that Summerville is the perfect mould of a winger. Small, lightweight, but rapid.
He has plenty of skills and is often caught at the other end of the pitch. He works hard, but is hardly a defensive wide man. So, to suggest he can play in midfield is an intriguing one. Does he have the physicality of it? Well, time will tell.
