Jesse Marsch is far from popular amongst Leeds fans.
The American was largely culpable for relegation in the 2022/23 campaign, losing his job in February that season after overseeing just four wins and six draws from 20 Premier League games that term.
Neither Javi Gracia nor Sam Allardyce were able to help Leeds recover from that abysmal start.
Jesse Marsch was rightly hammered for doing such a poor job, but the man from Wisconsin has now admitted he found the backlash to be “unfair” – while bravely insinuating Leeds fans are idiots in a revealing interview with The Overlap US.
Jesse Marsch defends himself after woeful stint at Leeds United
The 52-year-old said: “Let’s start with this first. I had been on the higher end of the food chain with most of the clubs I coached, not the lower end… from a technical and tactical respect, competing in that league is such an amazing challenge, every week, studying opponents and coaches, what a challenge, amazing, awesome.
“Look, the scrutiny, it means it’s important, is it often unfair, unrealistic and ridiculous? Is that country full of idiotic experts at every club and every fan thinking they’re Pep Guardiola? Yes. But that’s what makes the Premier League different as well, the stadiums are powerful, the energy of the fans.”
Boasting about his career at the “higher end of the food chain” before insulting Leeds fans will do very little for Marsch in the way of repairing his reputation in Yorkshire, needless to say.
If anything, these new comments are only likely to make supporters dislike him even more.
How has Jesse Marsch fared since leaving Leeds United?
Marsch – who boasted about his win at Anfield too – seems to suggest he took a step down from his usual level to manage Leeds during that interview with The Overlap US, but his efforts with Canada since departing Yorkshire hardly stand out.
15 months after receiving his P45 at Leeds, the former RB Leipzig boss was handed a deal with Canada which runs until the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Marsch – who Pascal Struijk criticised recently – has overseen 12 wins, five draws and eight defeats from 25 games so far, hardly setting the world alight as his side fail to score in their last three outings too.
| Matches | Wins | Draws | Losses | Goals (For:Against) | Points | Points Per Game |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 12 | 5 | 8 | 47:38 | 41 | 1.64 |
Perhaps he ought to focus on helping Canada find the net instead of spending more time whinging about his miserable stint at Leeds.
