Jesse Marsch says Leeds player is better than summer signing as a no.8 midfielder

Jesse Marsch has told his post-match press conference – as per Leeds Live – that Sam Greenwood is a better no.8 than summer signing Marc Roca, after Greenwood came on scored a gorgeous goal in our 4-3 win over Bournemouth.

Leeds were booed off at half-time despite taking the lead. Rodrigo’s penalty was cancelled out by Marcus Tavernier, before Phillip Billing put Bournemouth 2-1 up. The Cherries made it 3-1 through Dom Solanke shortly after the break.

But Leeds came roaring back. Marsch says he reverted to a 4-3-3 system in the second half, and decided to bring on Greenwood after 54 minutes – replacing Roca. Greenwood immediately changed the game, scoring to make it 3-2.

It was the ex-Arsenal academy star’s first-ever goal at professional level. Curling an effort from the edge of the area, first time, into the top corner. Then, Greenwood was on hand to lay on an assist for captain Liam Cooper. 3-3.

The winner was all about two players – Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville. Gnonto ran the length of the pitch before sliding in Summerville to score the winner. Marsch spoke about Greenwood after the match, as per Leeds Live.

“We rotated more to a 4-3-3- against the ball, which would help us. It gave us a position to transition more. Sam is a better eight than Marc. Helped with set-pieces and deliveries. Did not anticipate that great goal,” Marsch said.

Marsch: Greenwood better no.8 that Leeds signing Roca

Greenwood deserves enormous praise. His goal was glorious, his corner for Cooper was pinpoint and he certainly changed the game. Arguably, one of his best performances in a Leeds shirt, of which he now has 16.

While Marsch and Leeds were booed at half-time, the American gaffer also deserves credit for the bravery of his subs. He took Harrison off at half-time to bring on Gnonto, who was fantastic – earning an 8/10 in our player ratings.

But bringing Greenwood on and switching to a 4-3-3 with Aaronson and Greenwood in front of Tyler Adams won the game. Leeds were so much better in the second 45 and this is probably the reason why. What a win.
