Jesse Marsch has claimed in his press conference that Rodrigo produced one of the best performances he has ever had from a striker in Leeds United’s agonising loss to Aston Villa on Friday.
Many Whites fans were left feeling incredibly sick after the full-time whistle at Villa Park. Leeds were superb in a lot of ways against Unai Emery’s men. And yet, they fell to a 2-1 defeat, failing to take their chances until Patrick Bamford got a goal back late on.
Certainly, one of the players who could be pleased with his display was Rodrigo. The Spaniard has been outstanding all season, scoring 10 league goals. And he has established himself as a real leader amongst the young squad.
Marsch amazed by Rodrigo display
He had a goal ruled out for offside. And he had another attempt cleared off of the line. It was simply one of those days in which the 31-year-old seemed destined to never score.
Nevertheless, Marsch suggested that he could have hardly asked for more from Rodrigo as he discussed his performance against the Villans.
“I thought Rodri was fantastic against Villa, fantastic in every phase of the match,” he told his press conference.
“One of the best performances I’ve ever had from a striker, especially considering that he wasn’t able to get the goal. But what a strong performance. And he’s obviously in great form.”
Firstly, it needs to be said that some of Marsch’s comments after the loss to Villa have not struck the right tone with fans. There is a lot of frustration that he can be so positive after another loss.
The performance was good. But the same mistakes seem to be happening time and time again. So it is no longer easy to take the positives from such a game.
And no doubt, there are going to be some who do not appreciate Marsch’s comments today. However, Rodrigo does deserve praise for that display when you consider how good he has been throughout this season.
He has stepped up in a big, big way. And he has certainly silenced many of his doubters – including this writer.
Marsch has worked with some impressive strikers, including Erling Haaland. So his claim is a very significant one. And hopefully there is still a lot more to come from Rodrigo in the months ahead.
