Jesse Marsch is yet to find himself a new job since leaving Leeds United in February but he could be about to return to the dugout – with Birmingham City whittling down their list to only three names.
Marsch was sacked in February just under a year after taking over from Marcelo Bielsa. A loss at Forest condemning the American. His signings didn’t work and a lack of tactical nous left Leeds with no choice.
Marsch has since commented on his Leeds sacking, even claiming Andrea Radrizzani lost his nerve in choosing to sack him. He’s since been linked with Leicester, Southampton and the USA National Team.
But the American has not taken on a new role as of yet as he enjoys time with his family, living in Italy. However, a report from The Sun’s Alan Nixon now states that he is closing in on a return to football.
It is close to home, too. Birmingham sacked Wayne Rooney after we beat them 3-0 on New Year’s Day, and Marsch is in the last three names as Birmingham conduct a process of hiring Rooney’s replacement.

The other names are recognisable, too. Paul Heckingbottom, another former Leeds gaffer, is looking for a new role after being sacked by Sheffield United. The other is Tony Mowbray, after his Sunderland exit.
So, two experienced Championship managers with promotion in this division on their CV’s. Marsch, a more exciting, attacking manager with Champions League games and League titles to his name.
It will be interesting to see who Birmingham go for. They overachieved in the early part of the season under John Eustace, and underachieved with Rooney. Somewhere in the middle, is about right.
