Patrick Bamford took his tally to a whopping 16 goals in the Premier League on Wednesday night as Leeds United made it three wins from three with a 2-0 victory over Southampton. The uncapped Englishman continued his brilliant goalscoring form of 2020-21 – to the delight of Leeds icon Jermaine Beckford, who sent a voice note message to the Leeds United podcast’s WhatsApp group chat, and that message was played on the latest show.
Bamford, 27, continued to defy pre-season expectations that he would struggle in the Premier League with another goal. He remains in joint fifth in the Premier League goal charts along with Everton’s Dom Calvert-Lewin, behind Harry Kane, Mo Salah, Bruno Fernandes and Son Heung-min – though he has seven assists, compared to Calvert-Lewin’s zero. Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins has only managed to find the back of the net 14 times/
With the scoreline reading 0-0, Rodrigo chipped a delightful pass into Bamford and allowing the ball to run across him – the ex-Chelsea man flicked home a left-footed effort through goalkeeper Alex McCarthy’s legs to score his 16th of the season. Tyler Roberts got a second – his first Premier League goal – and Beckford reacted with a voice note on the podcast’s WhatsApp group, joking he had otherwise been “terrible”.

“What a man, what a beautiful man. Great run, great finish – on the outside of the left duke and pulling out a cheeky megs on the bounce. Who do you think you are? Nah joking aside, mate, buzzing for you because you were terrible all game,” Beckford told the latest Leeds United podcast on Spotify.
Does Bamford get into England’s side? His goals and assists are excellent, and with Callum Wilson ruled out and Danny Ings still rusty following a spell on the sidelines, a striker is needed. Harry Kane remains first choice and despite a difficult second half to the season, Dom Calvert-Lewin is likely to be second choice. Now the squads have been extended to 26 players, he might just have a small chance of making it.
