January 3rd, remember the date. Well, Jermaine Beckford certainly has after posting a throwback on his Instagram to that famous day now nine years ago.
A long, looping ball over the back of Manchester United’s defence saw Beckford race through. Leeds, a League One side at the time, were supposed to be focusing on gaining promotion.
Though Simon Grayson did deliver promotion, it was January 3rd’s moment that captured Leeds’ hearts. Beckford controlled the long ball from Jonny Howson.
With a flash of his left foot, Beckford slotted the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak. Leeds held on to beat Manchester United 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup. Nine years on, and the man himself has posted on Instagram.
The win remains in the hearts of Leeds fans, perhaps being Grayson’s finest moment as Leeds boss. The song continues to be sung from the terraces and will do again when Leeds face QPR.
The Whites take on Steve McClaren’s side in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday. What’s perhaps poignant about the song, is now the last line.
We’re Super Leeds, and we’re going up. Well this season, Marcelo Bielsa could really pay homage to that song.
