Javi Gracia has told Thursday’s press conference – as per Leeds United’s YouTube channel – that Brenden Aaronson is “concerned” over his lack of goals and assists since moving to Elland Road, but praised the American for his form.
Since swapping Salzburg for £25m last summer and becoming Jesse Marsch’s first signing, USA star Aaronson has managed just one goal and two assists in 32 games. As a no.10, it is not the kind of numbers he’d have hoped for.
Especially given at Salzburg, he had a hand in 28 goals during his 66 outings. He has shown glimpses of magic, his drag back and flick against Forest in the second half on Tuesday an example. But the numbers are on his mind.
Gracia was asked in Thursday’s press conference – ahead of Sunday’s match against Palace – about Aaronson’s lack of numbers. Especially compared to Jack Harrison, who has 14 goals and assists in 31 outings. Gracia commented.
“I think Brenden, now, is concerned about trying to score more goals for the team. But he is doing a great job for the team, playing in between the lines, creating play and helping in the defensive work. He is the balance we need.
“We need everyone to have the mentality Brenden has. In the future, we will give him more skills to score more. It is coming. He has the right attitude, I am sure of that,” Gracia told his press conference on Thursday, ahead of Sunday.

Obviously, football is not all about goals and assists. Aaronson brings a lot more to the table than laying on the last pass, or finishing chances himself. Indeed, he is often the one picking up pockets of space and feeding others.
His transitional play and positioning is excellent. While some criticism him for being light-weight, he often escapes the clutches of defenders with his brain. He gets Leeds up the pitch and works his socks off. He is a huge asset.
