Javi Gracia has been quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post as saying that Leeds United’s club-record signing Georgie Rutter will go on to have a “brilliant future” – when asked about the Frenchman’s early struggles at the club.
Rutter, 20, was bought for an initial £28m in January from Hoffenheim in a deal that could reach as much as £40m. He has since made 11 appearances for Leeds, but is yet to score or lay on an assist. He has started only three times.
With Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo now fit, Rutter is likely to be named on the bench this evening when Leeds play host to Liverpool. There have been glimpses – hitting the woodwork at Fulham, and some nice touches in transition.
Leeds fans are yet to see why the club splashed out such a huge figure on Rutter, and his game time is hardly giving him the chance to prove himself – either. Gracia was asked about Rutter and he responded with a positive verdict.
“He had some chances. In my time, he’s started playing some games and played some minutes in others. It’s true he’s not had continuity, but I’m sure when we have more chances he will show his quality and he will help the team.
“But I have to decide and try to choose what I think is best for the team. I don’t have any other explanation. Georgi is working very well, he’s a good character, and I’m sure his future will be brilliant,” Gracia told his press conference.

Just from some of Rutter’s little touches and turns, you can tell there is an incredibly skilful player that can play in a number of positions. The issue Rutter has is game time – and the knock to your confidence that comes with that.
He might get a few minutes against Liverpool. But with every game proving meaningful at this late stage in the season, Leeds and Gracia cannot afford to risk playing a player like Rutter. They need their proven stars to perform.
