‘It was telling’: Nation’s media criticise Leeds loanee again, hooked at half-time in 2-0 defeat

The German media have once again criticised Leeds United loanee Brenden Aaronson for his performance for Union Berlin on Saturday.

Aaronson was hooked at half time as Union were beaten 2-0 at home by Hoffenheim, with Berliner Zeitung suggesting ‘it was telling’ when he wasted a good opportunity to score.

The 21-year-old was one of several players who departed Leeds on loan in the summer who have had difficult starts to the season at their new club.

Of last year’s first team squad, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Jack Harrison, Luis Sinisterra and Max Wober all made temporary exits following Leeds’ relegation.

While the likes of Roca and Koch have won praise for their performances so far, others including Kristensen, Wober and the aforementioned Aaronson are struggling.

Leeds loanee Aaronson criticised by German media

Aaronson had not been supposed to start on Saturday but was called in at ‘short notice’ due to an injury for former West Ham United midfielder Alex Kral.

However, the USMNT international did not last long, as he was substituted at half time with the score at 2-0 having wasted an excellent opportunity to put his side in front just moments before Hoffenheim’s opener.

He said: “Slipped into the starting line-up at short notice for the injured Alex Král, but was unable to apply for further appearances. It was telling how he shot from a central position after 19 minutes, but put the ball well past the goal.”

It appears as though the same failings of Aaronson at Leeds are re-emerging in Berlin, with the 22-year-old still not having scored a competitive goal at club level since a 3-0 win against Chelsea, 13 months ago.

Aaronson was also criticised in midweek for his lack of robustness/strength in possession during a Champions League tie at Real Madrid, a weakness often aimed at him during his single season at Leeds.
