Plenty of Leeds United players were in action over the weekend as the international break continues to halt the Premier League campaign – and here is a round-up of the Elland Road stars that were in action, and how they got on:
Friday 23 September:
Illan Meslier (France U21’s)
The wonderkid goalkeeper continued to knock on the door of the senior France squad with a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Germany. His 11th cap for France at this level. The World Cup, though, seems a bit soon for Meslier at this time.
Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams (USA)
A disappointing afternoon for both Aaronson and Adams as they started in a 2-0 defeat to Japan in Germany. Both players saw out the entire 90 minutes, and will now take on Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening in Spain.
Willy Gnonto (Italy)
The deadline-day signing came off the bench against England to win his fifth cap for Italy at the San Siro. Winning numerous fouls, he made an instant impression – and even left a late one on Jack Grealish. A superb cameo role.
Saturday 24 September:
Sonny Perkins and Darko Gyabi (England U19’s)
Perkins was in terrific form as he scored a stunning hat-trick for England’s 19’s in a 6-0 drubbing of Georgia. It comes after he scored against Montenegro last Wednesday, too. A wonderful few days for Perkins. Gyabi was an unused sub.
Kristoffer Klaesson and Leo Hjelde (Norway U21’s)
Both players were unused substitutes as Norway’s Under-21 side dispatched Switzerland on Saturday with a 3-2 win. The young Leeds duo will be hoping for game time on Tuesday evening, when they take on Spain away from home.
Sunday 25 September:
Luis Sinisterra (Colombia)
Sini got off the mark for his country with a well-taken, first-time finish – the second of four for Colombia against Guatemala. He will be looking to win his seventh cap against Mexico in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Mateusz Klich (Poland)
Having come off the bench for 20 minutes against the Netherlands last week, Klich was perhaps a surprise omission from the entire Poland squad that travelled to Cardiff to take on Wales. Poland secured a narrow 1-0 win.
Rasmus Kristensen (Denmark)
Having struggled during his 30-minute cameo against Croatia before Sunday’s clash with France, Kristensen started for Denmark on Sunday. He produced a wonderful display, including five tackles, as Denmark beat France to win 2-0.
Dan James and Tyler Roberts (Wales)
Out on loan at Fulham, James started for the second time in the space of a few days for Wales – but could not do much to change the result, losing 1-0 to Poland. Wales Online said his pace was a “useful weapon”. Roberts was unused.
