Harry Redknapp says he ‘would have walked’ to Leeds United if he had been offered the manager’s job last season.
Leeds had four separate managers over the course of the campaign, one of which included Sam Allardyce, who Redknapp has gone up against several times in his career.
Redknapp was reportedly linked with the role following the sacking of Jesse Marsch in February, though in the latest episode of Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football Podcast, he revealed those rumours were wide of the mark.
After a long process which saw the likes of Andoni Iraola and Arne Slot reject Leeds, Javi Gracia ended up being offered the role after a brief interim period in charge for Michael Skubala.
Looking back, Victor Orta conducted an extremely farcical process which was doomed to fail from the start due to how late he left it to sack Marsch.
Redknapp was never an Orta type candidate
While Redknapp was never in the running to replace Marsch, he did say that there is no chance he would’ve turned it down, had he been offered it.
He said: “I would have walked there I’ll be truthful. If someone had actually asked me. I said my life’s good, I’m happy, but if there was [an approach] I would take it. I wouldn’t be able to say no. If there was someone who came along and said ‘Harry, would you be able to manage us?’
“I’m sure I would dive in head first like I’ve always done. Then think about it afterwards and realise I should never have done that. That never happened. I was never in the running for that job.”
The only reason Leeds ever turned towards Allardyce at the end of the season was because Orta had been sacked from his position as sporting director.
Never in a million years would Orta have hired someone like Redknapp, with the Spaniard always having been keen to go down the risky route – whether that be with managers or signings.
That said, Redknapp has not been in management since leaving Birmingham City in 2017 and so would’ve been an abysmal choice anyway.
