'I want people to criticise me': Leeds star Tyler Adams says he knows his weaknesses

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams has told Sunday’s press conference – after being named USA’s World Cup captain – that he knows his weaknesses and welcomes criticism ahead of his country’s opener on Monday against Wales.

Adams, 23, has been picked by manager Gregg Berhalter to lead the USA side into battle on Monday. They take on Gareth Bale’s Wales side in Group B, after England’s opener against Iran. It is a crucial game in determining the table.

England are expected to win the group, while Iran are likely to finish last. Wales and USA then, will be battling it out for second place and a qualification for the last 16. However, all four sides are in the top 20 places in FIFA’s rankings.

So, it might not be as obvious as perceived. Adams spoke in a press conference after he was given the armband ahead of the opener against Wales. He said he welcomes criticism and wants people to point out his weaknesses in his game.

“As much as I know my strengths, I know my weaknesses as well. And I want people to criticise me. I’m open to feedback all the time, and I want to get better and improve,” Leeds midfielder Adams said, as per the MLS website.

Right now though, no Leeds fan will be criticising Adams. He is a workhorse, a player with extreme physicality and aggression. He fits the Leeds shirt to a tee. Adams wants to fight, to get in player’s faces and we fans love that.

To be captaining his country at a World Cup at 23 is incredible – but no surprise. He is already a leader and some fans have suggested that Adams could be a long-term replacement for Liam Cooper, wearing the armband at Elland Road.
