‘I just think’… Carlton Palmer shares if he thinks Leeds and Sheffield United will get promoted

Leeds United will be hoping that despite the losses of Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray, they will have enough to gain promotion back to the Premier League this season.

A Leeds side that clocked up 90 points last season, a tally that would normally have seen Daniel Farke’s side finish in the top two. But Leeds lost in the play-off final and have to do it all again this time around.

Leeds have made a solid start, picking up eight points from four games and remaining unbeaten. Three clean sheets after conceding three in the opening game against John Mousinho’s Portsmouth outfit.

There is a debate to be had over whether this Leeds squad are as good as the side that came close to promotion last season. There is also a debate over whether the league’s best sides are weaker this term.

Palmer shares if he thinks Leeds and Sheffield United will go up

Losing the likes of Summerville, Rutter, Gray and Glen Kamara is obviously going to hamper any chances Leeds have of promotion. But, Manor Solomon, Largie Ramazani and Ao Tanaka have recently arrived.

Leeds have brought in replacements, but whether they are up to the level of the players they are coming in to replace remains to be seen. The potential is there and Palmer said Leeds will be up there this term.

He told FLW: “I just think Burnley and Leeds will be very strong, and Sheffield United will be very strong as well. You’ve got to remember they are on six points but were deducted two at the start of the season.”

Leeds have work to do to get themselves in the reckoning

There are issues in this Leeds side. While Pascal Struijk and Brenden Aaronson have returned as if they are new signings, there are still doubts in defence, a lack of midfield goals and the need for chemistry up top.

Jayden Bogle at right-back has been questionable so far, with Bogle described as “hit and miss” by Neil Redfearn. Ilia Gruev is solid but alongside Ethan Ampadu, it is a midfield that lacks any attacking punch.

Losing Summerville and Rutter, who had a hand in 31 and 24 goals respectively last season, will be tough to replace. Farke must find the right balance, the right connections in attack to get Leeds going again.
