‘I expect’ – Former Leeds United player gives surprise relegation verdict involving Sunderland and Burnley

Leeds United fans may be fearing the worst after deadline day, which proved to be another frustrating one at Elland Road.

Last January, Leeds United didn’t sign a single player in the window. Deadline day came around and it looked as though Daniel Farke would sign at least one player, but despite multiple efforts, nobody arrived.

The most recent deadline day played out in the same way. Although Leeds United signed ten new players in total this summer, Farke didn’t manage to bring anyone in on deadline day despite planning to do so.

Leeds United tried to sign Harry Wilson from Fulham in a last minute attempt. But it proved helpless and Leeds fans are now fearing the worst in the run-in to January, mainly with concerns about the club’s lack of firepower.

Danny Mills predicts tough start for promoted teams, including Leeds United

So far this season, the three promoted teams in Leeds United, Sunderland and Burnley have held their own. And all three spent big during the summer with Leeds United spending £100m on new players, same as Burnley, whilst Sunderland ended the window with some £160m spending on new signings.

As things stand, Burnley sit in 14th place of the Premier League table, Leeds in 12th and Sunderland up in 6th. But speaking live on talkSPORT (September 3rd), former Leeds United man Danny Mills insisted that all three teams will slump towards the bottom of the table in the next few games.

He said: “All the teams that came up have won a game. They have all started better than some people would have thought. I guess it will be very difficult for them, and they will have slumps.

“In another seven or eight games, the league will find a way to sort itself out. I expect the three teams that came up to be in the bottom seven or eight teams. It’s who can survive out of those.”

Kris Boyd picks out two teams to struggle in the Premier League

So far, Leeds have held their own. Last time out, Leeds United drew 0-0 with Newcastle at Elland Road in what was a good result for the Whites. But as Mills says, as the season goes on, the table will start to mould into its final form, and Leeds not having a whole lot of firepower could see them steadily slip down.

But Farke will be buoyed by the fact that there are a few teams not looking so great this season. Speaking recently, Kris Boyd picked out Brentford and Wolves to struggle this season, whilst suggesting Sunderland are his pick of the promoted teams.

He said: “When you look at Leeds have obviously spent a fortune, well the three teams coming up have spent a fortune, but I think Sunderland; good result of the weekend again, home form is going to be key for them.

“They’ve given themselves an opportunity. But I do think, the two teams that we’ve mentioned there [Wolves and Brentford], they’re a lot weaker, that will give the promoted teams an opportunity to stay in the league this year, whereas in years going by, you never thought that was going to be the case.”

Leeds United will simply have to take it game by game and hope that Dominic Calvert-Lewin eventually comes up with the goods.

Up next is a trip to Fulham after the international break.
