Huge CL club now in talks for 24-year-old who made 20 Leeds appearances last season

Borussia Dortmund are in talks with Juventus over a move for former Leeds United midfielder Weston McKennie.

That is according to ESPN, who report negotiations between the two clubs have progressed in recent days, though it is unclear whether it will be another loan, or permanent transfer.

McKennie spent the second half of last season on loan at Leeds, where he made 20 appearances as the Whites were relegated from the Premier League.

The 24-year-old endured a tough time at Elland Road and in the end, became a lightning rod for supporter criticism, with Leeds opting against triggering the £30 million purchase option in the deal, regardless of their division.

One potential obstacle in any move for McKennie to Dortmund could be his time at huge rivals Schalke 04, whom he played 91 times for between 2016 and 2020.

While Dortmund will provide McKennie with the chance to play Champions League football once again, the USMNT will not want to join another team where he may face difficulties with supporters after his time at Leeds.

Schalke and Dortmund is one of the biggest rivalries in Germany and it is unclear as to how they would take to McKennie given how fond his former club are of him.

Dortmund have decided to pursue a move for McKennie after a deal for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez fell through last week, despite having reached an agreement on personal terms.

Incidentally, this could actually positively impact Leeds with West Ham United also keen on Alvarez and now having a free run to his signature after the collapse of his Dortmund move.

If the Hammers were to sign Alvarez, it may end their interest in Tyler Adams, with both sharing similar defensive midfield profiles of being excellent ball-winners, therefore enhancing Leeds’ chances of keeping him.
