How Brenden Aaronson reacted to Leeds United selling Archie Gray to Tottenham this week

Brenden Aaronson will return to Leeds United like a new signing this summer after confirming he will be a part of next season’s push for promotion, and he has commented on a Leeds decision this week.

It has been two years since Leeds splashed out £25m to sign 23-year-old Aaronson from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg. The playmaker was Jesse Marsch’s first signing and arrived with real hype and hope.

He had played in the Champions League for Salzburg, impressing in the knockout stages against Bayern Munich during the 2021-22 season. The same campaign in which leads stayed up on the final day.

But like many signings made by Marsch and Victor Orta during that period, Aaronson struggled. A lack of physicality and goal involvements, twinned with his £25m fee, saw Leeds fans criticise the American ace.

Following relegation, Aaronson earned further criticism by using Victor Orta’s loan relegation clause to jump ship. Instead of trying to help Leeds get promoted after playing a part in relegation, he left Leeds.

One of eight players to do so, Aaronson moved to Union Berlin. Again, another struggle for Aaronson, but he did prove his importance as Union survived relegation on the final day with a 2-1 win over Freiburg.

After a chat with Daniel Farke, Aaronson will now return to Leeds. He feels he has unfinished business at the club but he will not be joined by Archie Gray next season, who has moved to Tottenham for £40m.

Gray sent a touching message to Leeds fans after his exit, a transfer that Leeds themselves have described as heartbreaking in their resulting statement. But a deal that proved necessary for the club’s finances.

Using Instagram, the teenage talent thanked those who have helped him get to where he is among other things. Plenty have reacted to the England U21 star’s move, which will see him play in the Europa League.

Aaronson has commented while in action at Copa America, with Gregg Berhalter’s side knocked out in the group stage by Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay among others. Aaronson posted four words on Gray’s post.
