Honest Chris Wilder gives new promotion verdict as Leeds United’s rivals Sheffield United lose to Sunderland

Leeds United failed to beat Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon but The Whites still managed to maintain a three-point lead at the top of the Championship table.

Pascal Struijk’s penalty looked as though it would hand Leeds a 16th Championship win of the season in their 25th league outing, but Blackburn went up the other end and scored an injury-time equaliser.

Daniel Farke’s frustration against John Eustace continues even if he did stop a losing streak against the Blackburn manager. But, it was not all bad news for Leeds on Saturday, as results went the way of Leeds.

Burnley failed to beat Stoke City despite boasting home advantage, drawing 0-0. Then, Sheffield United went to Sunderland in a Championship promotion battle, and the Blades suffered a 2-1 defeat.

Chris Wilder makes promotion claim as Sheffield United lose

Kieffer Moore missed an early penalty and Sunderland took full advantage, as Eliezer Mayenda scored after a mistake from Jack Robinson. Luke O’Nien’s own goal was quickly cancelled out by Wilson Isidor.

Sheffield United pushed and prodded but could not find a second equaliser and Sunderland secured a priceless win to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive, and Chris Wilder gave his take on the race.

“There’s still a long way to go. An interesting afternoon of Championship results, we’re still in and around it but that doesn’t mean we enjoyed getting beat or we enjoyed walking away without a result, it hurts.”

How does the Championship table now look after 25 matches?

So, Leeds remain three points clear at the top of the table but had The Whites managed to defend a corner in which Batth scored from, Farke’s men would have been sitting pretty and five points clear.

Leeds remain the only Championship side to have surpassed the 50-point mark having done so with the win over Derby County last week. Next up on Saturday, is a trip to struggling Hull City who lost to Boro.

What looks even more promising for Leeds, is that Burnley go to Blackburn on Saturday while Sheffield United face a difficult trip to Watford. Sunderland host Portsmouth, but Leeds could go six points clear.
