‘He’ll stay’… Leeds United star tipped to remain at Elland Road, ‘doesn’t make sense’ for him to go

Despite signing a new deal at Leeds United, Archie Gray continues to be linked with the Premier League’s biggest clubs – but Brian Deane is confident the teenager will remain at Elland Road.

Gray, who is still 17 until next Tuesday, has been a key part of this Leeds side since the arrival of Daniel Farke as manager. Already he’s played 39 times this term, and will reach 50 if we go into the play-offs.

He signed a new deal that keeps him at Leeds until 2028 – but, has interest from Premier League sides. Reports say that Leeds are expecting bids for a player Georginio Rutter recently described as “special”.

Gray has made it clear he is happy at Leeds and his dream is simply playing for us. But he will harbour ambition of playing right at the top – something which his potential is promising. His head could turn.

Elland Road icon Deane, though, does not believe he will go – even going as far as saying it would not make sense for Gray to depart. He looks at Kalvin Phillips’ example, during an interview with FLW.

“I think he’ll stay. This is the best club for him, where he’ll get an understanding of the game and great development. He’s very well-supported. The Gray family is very well thought of. Leave somewhere too quickly or make the wrong move, it can ruin your career. Look at what has happened to Kalvin Phillips.

“His career has stalled. It’s going to be hard to see how he comes back from that. Archie has got good people around him and that’s the difference. He will have his Dad, his grandfather and has the support of the people who have seen everything. I don’t see how he goes anywhere; it just doesn’t make sense.”

Given he is still only 17, and only just about to turn 18, Gray should not feel under any pressure to leave Leeds. Yes, he might outgrow us at some point. But, right now, he is at the right place to continue.

Even if Leeds don’t get promoted, Gray is at the right club. By the time he turns 21 and a big club comes in for him, with 200 appearances for Leeds to his name – then so be it. Right now, Leeds is best for him.
