‘He was really good’… BBC pundit thinks £10.5m Leeds player was brilliant against Swansea last night

Leeds United produced one of their best performances of the season at Swansea City on Tuesday night.

Daniel Farke did not commit either way to whether it was actually number one but a 4-0 victory on the road at any side in the Championship is an excellent achievement.

Leeds were forced to adapt right on the stroke of kick-off in South Wales as Patrick Bamford – who was pencilled in to start – limped out of the warm-up and had to be replaced by Joel Piroe.

Piroe was returning to the Swansea.com Stadium for the first time since moving to Leeds for £10.5 million in the summer, and got on the scoresheet inside 10 minutes almost immediately after Crysencio Summerville’s opener.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after the game, pundit Jon Newsome was very impressed with the performance of Piroe and how he took his chance to impress in Bamford’s absence.

He said: “I think you hit the nail on the head there, when the chance has come he has taken it. That’s how he will have viewed it. Sometimes it is a little bit easier five or 10 minutes before the game kicks off, all of a sudden you are playing and you don’t have a lot of time to think about it.

“You just want to go out and perform. I thought he was really good, he was busy, got hold of the ball. We spoke about him before the game and I was interested to see if Piroe played as the nine, and dropped Rutter as the 10 which is where he has been playing behind Bamford.

“Earlier in the season it was the other way around. I think as we have seen tonight it is far better when Piroe plays as a nine and Rutter as a 10. It works, really good performance and gets his goal.”

Having been Leeds’ marquee arrival in the summer, it could’ve been easy for Piroe to sulk amid his recent omission from the team, but it shows the character in the squad to come in and perform.

His inclusion into the team also did not prevent from Rutter from playing as a number 10, which is where he has shone so much since the turn of the New Year.

It is unclear how long Bamford may be out for after his injury last night but Piroe will be hoping last night is the catalyst to kick starting his season once again.
