‘He looks like a class act’… Jeff Stelling so impressed by Leeds player everybody was laughing at last season

Jeff Stelling has suggested that everyone has been completely silenced by Georginio Rutter this season, noting that the Leeds United forward now looks like such a class act.

It has been a turbulent 12 months for Georginio Rutter. There was plenty of excitement when Leeds broke their transfer record to bring the Frenchman to Elland Road as the Whites faced a battle to stay in the Premier League.

However, it quickly became apparent that Georginio was the wrong signing for what Leeds needed in such a chaotic season. The 21-year-old barely featured in the Premier League as the Whites fell out of the top-flight with a whimper.

Georginio Rutter proving many wrong with form for Leeds this season

Some may have expected Georginio to be one of the first out of the door in the summer. However, the former Hoffenheim man decided to stay. And thank goodness he did.

Georginio has been one of the best players in the Championship this season. He has scored six goals and provided 13 assists in the second tier.

And speaking on talkSPORT (broadcast on 26/2; 7:28), Jeff Stelling claimed that he has been one of the standout players in the Championship this season.

“Everybody laughed at Georginio Rutter when he first came to this country and he couldn’t hit a barn door. But now he looks like a class act,” he said.

“The biggest thing in Leeds’ favour of course is Elland Road.”

Frenchman is hopefully going to be a key player for years to come

Certainly, it does not feel as if the comeback would have happened on Friday night without Georginio. He had as poor a first-half as he has had in a long time against Leicester. But he was involved in all three goals.

He is undoubtedly one of the players in Leeds’ squad who is clearly too good for the second tier. So it will be very interesting to see how he fares if we get promoted.

Presumably, we will not be able to expect him to steal the show quite as often. But given how well the ball usually sticks to his feet, and how difficult he is for Championship defenders to contain, there seems to be no reason why he cannot be a game-changer in the top-flight.

And if we do not go up this year, it is going to be a monumental task to keep him at Elland Road.
