‘Has to work’: 22-year-old already told by new club what he must improve after Leeds loan exit

Union Berlin director Oliver Ruhnert has told Brenden Aaronson he must work on his ‘physicality’ following his move from Leeds United.

Ruhnert was speaking in an interview with Kicker in response to Aaronson’s comments on what he would like to add to his locker while in Berlin this season.

Aaronson claimed that while he does not want to add any extra pressure onto his shoulders, he is targeting between five and 10 goals during the 2022/23 campaign, as he knows it’s important for players in his position.

The 22-year-old managed to find the net just once during his 12 months at Leeds, when he netted the opener in a 3-0 win over Chelsea in August last year, tackling Edouard Mendy on his own line before tapping home.

Considering Leeds spent £25 million to sign him from Red Bull Salzburg, that tally was a huge disappointment and a huge contributing to factor as to why the Whites went down.

As a result of his disappointing campaign, Aaronson has since gone onto make the season-long-loan switch to Union Berlin, and their director has already pointed out where he must improve.

He said: “He still has to work on his physicality.”

It became apparent pretty quickly during his time at Elland Road that Aaronson was struggling with the physical demands of the league, which eventually became a major lightening rod for fan criticism.

Aaronson did also not have the technical ability to make up for his lack of strength, and as such, he was frequently brushed off the ball by defenders.

That said, given his age, Aaronson is arguably the most likely of the six loan departures who could return to Leeds next summer, and this loan could hand him the opportunity to work on those things, particularly if he has already been told by his new club that it is an issue.
