Javi Gracia has praised Leeds United star Marc Roca in his latest press conference ahead of Tuesday’s FA Cup clash against Fulham – branding the Spaniard as “important” and boasting the “mentality” that he needs his squad to have.

Roca, 26, returned from injury on Saturday afternoon in the 1-0 win over Southampton – coming off the bench to play the final few minutes. It comes after failing to play in any of the three games under Michael Skubala’s caretaker charge.

The Spain U21 star has clocked up 23 games for Leeds since joining the club from Bayern Munich last summer. But a lack of form of late saw Leeds decide to bring in Weston McKennie to partner Tyler Adams in the middle of the park.

Asked about Roca after he came off the bench and could be given a start on Tuesday against Fulham, Gracia said that the £10m signing from Bayern is an important player for Leeds. He has the mentality that the squad needs to have.

“Marc Roca will be, and is important in this team. Playing from the beginning, or playing like he did the other day. That is the mentality we need,” Gracia said in his press conference when asked about Roca, as per the club’s YT channel.

“It’s not so important if a player is playing or not, but it is important that he can still help the team – and Marc did it the other day. When he plays from the beginning, I’m sure he will do, too,” Gracia continued in Monday’s press conference.

Roca has been impressive throughout the season. His technical quality and passing has become renowned among Leeds fans. The issue Roca has had this season, certainly over the past couple of months, is Leeds have struggled.

Our poor form has meant we struggle to keep hold of the ball. A lack of confidence, and a nervousness, has been a part of our side, especially towards the end of Jesse Marsch’s reign. But under Gracia, Roca could regain his form.
