Georginio Rutter endured a nightmare start to his Leeds United spell after joining us in January, but he has gone from zero to hero this season – and he says the win over Leicester helped him to forget.
Rutter, 21, has been sensational for the Whites during 2023-24 – the attacking heartbeat that connects midfield to attack, supplying chance after chance for the likes of Cree Summerville and Patrick Bamford.
But it comes after joining Leeds in January 2023 for a club-record fee, unable to speak the language. In a side that sacked their manager a month later, and eventually relegated. He had little chance to shine.
Just one league start, failing to score in 13 in total. But this season it is a different story, having a hand in 21 goals in 37 games. He provided two assists in our recent 3-1 win over league leaders Leicester City.
Speaking to The Mirror ahead of Tuesday’s game against Stoke, Rutter explained how he “thought a lot” about the Leicester win and how the victory and atmosphere helped him forget about his start at Leeds.
“The Leicester game was unbelievable. I thought about a lot of things after. Last year was not so good and when you have a day like this you forget. Good teammates and fans. Good relationship with fans.”

While his signing is now seeming like a masterstroke, given how young he is but also his ability to dictate and control games, it was completely the wrong time to bring him in. He has benefitted from relegation.
He never stood a chance in making an impact in January, during the final six months of our relegation to the Championship. He needed game time, confidence and a manager that believed in him, for it to work.
Now, he has all that. The lynchpin of this Leeds side, one of the first names on the team sheet under a manager that knows how to get the best out of him. If Leeds do go up, Rutter will be absolutely crucial.
