Georginio Rutter has named Eric Cantona has the one player from Leeds United’s history he would’ve most liked to play alongside.

Rutter gave his answer in JD Sports’ ‘Ultimate FC24 Club Challenge’, where players from several different clubs across Europe including Leeds, Torino, Celtic and Union Berlin took part.

Cantona only spent 11 months of his career at Elland Road but did help Leeds lift the final ever Division One title in 1992, making 15 appearances after joining from Nimes in February that year.

He then started the following season in the Premier League at Leeds in electric form with six goals and two assists in six appearances, before moving to Manchester United.

Leeds were reportedly happy to sell Cantona to the bitter rivals they had just won the title ahead of the season prior due to a major falling out with manager Howard Wilkinson.

Much of Rutter’s admiration for Cantona, of course, will come from the fact they are both French. The 57-year-old is seen as a legend back in his native homeland.

That said, it probably isn’t the answer Leeds fans would’ve liked to hear after the way he left the club, though Rutter is way too young to even remember the ins and outs of his departure anyway.

The two players would’ve formed a nice little partnership as a front two, with Rutter floating about and creating chances for Cantona to finish off, like he did so often in his career.

Rutter will be hoping he can emulate the sort of success Cantona enjoyed during his playing days, when he accumulated a large number of major honours.

Hopefully Rutter can achieve those sort of things at Leeds, though first things first – a promotion from the Championship would do for now.
