Georginio Rutter admits enduring ‘difficult’ start at Leeds, labels first few months as ‘complicated’

Georginio Rutter has told LUTV that he found life “difficult” at Leeds United during his first few months at the club after his move to Elland Road in January – admitting his first few months were “complicated”.

Rutter, 21, a club-record signing from Hoffenheim, failed to score in the 13 appearances he was afforded during the second half of last season. But, having signed a contract until 2028, he has stayed at Leeds.

Injury ruled Rutter out of the first two games against Cardiff City and Shrewsbury Town. He could only come on as a sub against Birmingham. But he has now started two games in a row, scoring on Saturday.

A moment of brilliance, on Saturday. Not used as a no.9 this time due to the signing of Joel Piroe, Rutter was used in a more favoured position of his. It saw him pick up the ball outside of the box on 10 minutes.

Turning inside, he waltzed past a couple of Ipswich defenders with a neat flourish before finishing with ease – despite the narrow angle. A gorgeous goal. Not one of a player that has struggled for confidence.

Rutter spoke to LUTV after the game, admitting he found life at Leeds tough to begin with after his move: “I am very happy because it was a difficult moment for me last year. It was a little bit complicated.

“For a young player, new club, new country, don’t know much. Complicated. Today is the first. I need to score more for the team, for the club and for my confidence,” Rutter added, after scoring his first goal.

It was hardly his fault. Rutter did not ask to be thrown into a Premier League relegation battle at such a young age. The price tag weighed heavy on his shoulders. He was even being played out of position.

Victor Orta, bizarrely, signed him as a no.9. But Rutter starred most at Hoffenheim from the right flank. It was never going to work. But a full pre-season, a drop in leagues, and playing in a new role will help.

Daniel Farke’s arrival at Elland Road – and the chance to play more regularly – will give Rutter the stage he needs to shine in a Leeds shirt. His goal on Saturday will do our record signing the world of good.
