Gary Neville’s claim that Leeds United are “okay” in the relegation race is supported by both their remaining fixtures and the history of Premier League survival.
On Friday night, Nottingham Forest produced a remarkable 5-0 away win over Sunderland. The next day, both West Ham and Tottenham secured narrow wins. All of a sudden, the gap is six points once again.
Leeds had gone nine clear of Spurs. But FA Cup duty, and Spurs’ win, has reduced the arrears. However, the positive for Leeds is that it remains in the Whites’ control – and they face teams below them.
How many points do YOU think Leeds win from the last five PL games?
Three will surely be enough!
Those matches place them directly against sides in the same fight, meaning their survival will be decided by results they can influence rather than relying on others. Does Gary Neville think Leeds are safe?
Neville’s confidence is rooted in reality, not bias or past trauma
On his Sky Sports podcast on Saturday evening, Gary Neville said Leeds are “okay” and made it clear he expects them to beat Burnley, a result that would shift the pressure elsewhere.
He also pointed to the wider picture, identifying Tottenham and West Ham as the sides more likely to define the relegation battle in the coming weeks. He believes Forest are one win away from safety.
“I went to bed last night [Friday] thinking Nottingham Forest are okay. Still think they’re okay now, but less so than I did 24 hours ago. We were watching the West Ham and Tottenham stuff,” Neville said.

“We talk about the title race but that West Ham, Tottenham, Forest dynamic in the next few weeks, could be where the real thrill and excitement lies. That league table when West Ham scored to make it 1-0.
“Tottenham we’re still 0-0 and were four points clear, but Tottenham get that goal. Thrilling day in the relegation race, more thrill in the title race, I have no idea what is going to happen. Flip of a coin job.
“I thought Leeds were out of it. Leeds’ fixtures are good, Burnley, Tottenham, Brighton, West Ham. I think Leeds will beat Burnley and they won’t get caught. They’re okay. Forest need one more win,” he added.
Premier League history strongly supports Neville’s view
Survival thresholds show how rare it is for teams in Leeds’ position to go down, with only three teams have been relegated with 40 or more points in the competition’s history.
Are we safe? Can we stop worrying now? 👊
That scenario has not happened in the modern era, with none since 2002-03, underlining how stable the safety line has become. The extreme case remains when West Ham went down with 42 points.
But that season stands as a clear outlier. In reality, Sunderland and Bolton both went down with 40 before the modern trend emerged, and 36 points has been enough to stay up consistently in recent seasons.
Leeds’ position combines favourable fixtures with a historical safety margin that very rarely collapses, making Neville’s stance grounded in evidence rather than optimism.
