Gary Neville aims sharp reality check at Leeds United in relegation verdict

Four points in the space of four days have taken Leeds United from the relegation zone to a much safer-looking 16th place in the Premier League table – but there’s a long way to go.

The message from Daniel Farke and Leeds has been the same throughout. The need to secure a point a game on average, and to finish 17th or higher. It is black and white, success or failure, no middle ground.

Does Daniel Farke get the credit he deserves? 🤔

Well, the four points in games against Chelsea and Liverpool have returned Leeds to that curve, after a disastrous run of six defeats in seven Premier League games that almost saw Farke lose his job at Leeds.

Everton’s win over Nottingham Forest has made Ao Tanaka’s equaliser look even better, with Leeds now climbing into 16th place. But after 15 games, Leeds have still only obtained 15 points this season.

Gary Neville issues reality check after whirlwind Leeds week

No one saw Leeds winning four points, or even avoiding defeat to Chelsea and Liverpool, and with that, has come a newfound confidence and belief. But Leeds remain in a dangerous position in 16th place.

Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Gary Neville has ordered a reality check in the direction of Leeds and the club’s supporters. Neville says that this week will reinstall some hope, but nothing has been done yet.

“A good day for them, it puts them in with a real shout of staying in this league,” Neville said, who had predicted Leeds to be relegated at the end of the season. “I think it’s that big a moment this week.

“There is a long way to go, they can’t get carried away, haven’t done anything yet, but you have proven you can live with three of the top sides in this division, and you can beat them up,” Neville continued.

Predicting Leeds United’s remaining three matches in 2025

Much is made of the busy Christmas period, but in actual fact, Leeds have three games to play before the turn of the year. The first comes in the form of a trip to London, to face an impressive Brentford side.

Then, Leeds return to Elland Road to face Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace, who continue to shine under the German’s guidance. 2025 comes to an end at the Stadium of Light, against newly-promoted Sunderland.

There is a chance of points across the next three games, especially against a Sunderland side without their African players. FIFA have ruled players going to the African Cup of Nations must leave on the 15th.

Lukas Nmecha should be fit to play against Brentford, while Sean Longstaff will be pushing for a return by the end of the month. Dan James is expected to remain on the sidelines until the latter stages of January.
