Gary Lineker watched on as Leeds United came from behind to beat Preston on Sunday afternoon at Elland Road as Joel Piroe scored a late penalty – and Lineker gave his take on the impressive victory.
After controversially losing 2-1 at Deepdale in a match where Illan Meslier was harshly sent off, we were out for revenge against Ryan Lowe’s side, who had had a poor run of form prior to beating Bristol City.
Liam Millar scored the winner last time out and he made an instant impact, laying on the assist for Will Keane to score early on. But as is the way with Leeds, Daniel Farke‘s men replied instantly on Sunday.
Dan James continued his brilliant run of form to make it 1-1. But the scoreline remained that way for the entire game – until 93 minutes, when Leeds were awarded a penalty for a handball in the final seconds.
Patrick Bamford, learning from past mistakes, handed the ball to Piroe – and the Dutchman kept his cool to hand Leeds a crucial win. Lineker shared what he noticed about Leeds’ win on The Rest Is Football.
“I was watching that and they scored that penalty in the 94th minute. It was actually a really entertaining game. It was passionate, feisty. And I kept thinking Leeds are going to nick this and they did in the end.”

It was a huge win. A win that Farke described as a possibly season-defining moment. But it was done in the Leeds way, nervy throughout until we finally got over the line. It keeps the pressure on the top three.
Leicester take on Ipswich tonight and realistically, the Foxes are running away with the league. Leeds need Leicester to take all three points, forcing Ipswich to drop points. It would keep the gap at just four.
