Fulham and Anfield absence should tempt £1m Leeds man to seek January loan exit

Jesse Marsch has seemingly changed his mind. For the entirety of the season, Kristoffer Klaesson has been Leeds United’s second-choice goalkeeper but in the last two games, Joel Robles has come in – Klaesson needs a loan.

Klaesson, 21, joined Leeds from Norwegian side Valerenga for a fee of £1million. Last season, he warmed the bench as Illan Meslier’s cover – but only managed one senior outing. He came on in the comeback win over Wolves, a 3-2 win.

This season, he has continued to warm the bench – while turning out regularly for the 21’s. But the club signed veteran Joel Robles on a free transfer from Real Betis in the summer. Against Fulham, Robles was named on the bench.

It was the same at Anfield. Robles was picked over Klaesson. It says Marsch has changed his mind, his pecking order between the sticks. Robles is now the man to provide cover for Meslier – and Klaesson has dropped to third choice.

With Klaesson having already played 57 times at senior level for Valerenga, he finds himself at a standstill in his career. As January approaches, and Klaesson dropping down the pecking order, a loan has got to be a serious consideration.

Robles has come in: Leeds goalkeeper Klaesson needs a loan

It is the right decision. It is much better to have a player with experience, a player that can add to the dressing room on the bench – rather than a youngster in Klaesson. That is no slight on Klaesson, but that Robles is just more experienced.

The Spaniard has also developed a strong relationship with Rodrigo, Marc Roca and Junior Firpo since his arrival. So, having him in the matchday squad makes sense. Klaesson is a goalkeeper with potential, but he needs to show it.

Having played 58 senior matches in his career, 21’s football is not going to advance his development. If he is now third choice, a loan is needed. His absence in the 21’s would also allow Harry Christy to come in and gain more minutes.
