At the time, Frank Lampard gave an impassioned interview ahead of Leeds United’s 2-0 win over Derby County following Spygate. So much so, that Leeds fans created their own song for him.

To the tune of Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis, Leeds fans sang “stop crying Frank Lampard“. A song that reverberated around Elland Road in the immediate aftermath of Spygate, as Leeds won 2-0.

Kemar Roofe and Jack Harrison got the goals in January 2019. While Leeds did the double over Derby and won the first play-off semi-final away. Lampard had the last laugh as they went to the final.

It was clear that in his interviews in and around the time of the incident, in which Marcelo Bielsa sent a Leeds employee to Derby’s training ground to spy on Lampard’s training, Lampard was not happy with it.

He described it as “unethical” in that interview after the 2-0 win. Bielsa then gave an impassioned press conference, underlying the detail he goes into, highlighting what little difference a spy would make.

Frank Lampard delivers surprise new take on Spygate

Bielsa was never far away from the spotlight at Leeds – his decision to give Villa a goal after Mateusz Klich scored, winning the FIFA Fairplay award. Lampard also gave his first impressions of Bielsa.

Lampard though, was not happy at the time – so it comes as a bit of a surprise that in an interview this week with JOE, the former Derby and Chelsea boss said he “wasn’t that bothered” by the whole saga.

“The Spygate stuff at the time, they sent someone to watch training and had someone hidden in the bushes. It all went off a little bit. It was an amazing press story, fans were loving it,” Lampard told Joe.

“Really, I wasn’t that bothered. I defended myself and the club. People said I shouldn’t talk about it – but I defended the club, it’s not as if I was going to say ‘yeah, bring people to watch our training’,” he said.
