Leeds’s under-23 side continues to show some superb form. Carlos Corberan’s men top their league table and stand a good chance of progressing out of their Premier League Cup group.
It is a remarkable achievement given that Marcelo Bielsa has used so many of his squad this season. And following the devastating news concerning Kemar Roofe, it would be a surprise if more did not follow the likes of Jamie Shackleton and Jack Clarke into the first-team before the campaign concludes.
With that in mind, here are five under-23 starlets who should be considered by Bielsa this term…
Hugo Diaz made his senior debut last season. However, the Spaniard is yet to play under Bielsa. Usually a centre-back, Diaz was superb in a holding midfield role against Bolton’s under-23s on Monday, bagging both assists.
With Luke Ayling struggling at times, there is perhaps a window for a right-back to put pressure on the first-team stalwart. Bryce Hosannah is a seriously exciting talent and cannot be too far away from being on Bielsa’s radar.
Robbie Gotts is one of the most talented players available to Corberan. Importantly, he offers versatility as he can play at right-back or further forward on the wing. His senior debut will surely come this season.
Alfie McCalmont seems to always look like a class act in midfield. The 18-year-old has worn the armband for the U23s and will surely be the kind of player that will provide cover Kalvin Phillips in the future.
Bobby Kamwa is probably the wildcard option. Against Bolton, he was exciting and danced past some players with ease. His end product needs work, but he is definitely one player to look out for in the future.
