Reports emerged on Wednesday morning that 23-year-old Gruev was a target. The Athletic’s Phil Hay said that Leeds had launched an enquiry. Then, Werder confirmed he was missing training for talks.

So, a move for Gruev is on the cards and Leeds are pushing to get more players in before Friday’s deadline – after the signing of Djed Spence from Tottenham. Here are five facts on the Bulgarian star.

Five facts on Ilia Gruev amid Leeds talks

1. Career so far, Werder breakthrough

So, it all started in 2015. Joining Werder’s academy at 16, Gruev played more than 100 times for the club’s U17, U19 and reserve teams. He has since been key for Bremen, playing 62 times at senior level.

2. Bulgaria international

Not only has he made his mark in German football in both the second tier, and last term, the Bundesliga proper – but Gruev has played eight times for his country. He made his debut against Gibraltar in 2022.

3. Ajax also interested in Gruev

Leeds are not alone in their interest of Gruev. Earlier this month, a report from the reliable German outlet Kicker claimed that Ajax are interested. So, it would be a bit of a coup if Leeds could win the Gruev race.

4. How much is Gruev going to cost?

Hay’s report states that any move for Gruev would be relatively cheap, in the region of £4m to land the Werder star. So, hardly an expense for Leeds. The issue will surely be trying to convince the Bulgarian.

5. Would be the third Bulgarian to play for Leeds

Only two Bulgarians have turned out for Leeds. Neither were relatively successful. Radostin Kishishev joined on loan in 2007, playing 10 times. Kun Tememuzhkov, just the once under Marcelo Bielsa.
