Fabrizio Romano says England international is looking for a new club, Leeds need him – Opinion

Leeds United’s search for a left-back is still ongoing as we enter the final few days of the summer window and Fabrizio Romano might have just given us the perfect option – in the form of Ryan Bertrand.

Leeds have struggled at left-back for years. Really, ever since Charlie Taylor went to Burnley in 2017. Barry Douglas joined in 2018, but injury hampered his progress. Gjanni Alioski was naturally a winger.

Laurens De Bock and others have come and gone. Stuart Dallas has not played since April 2022 and Sam Byram is right-footed. Junior Firpo remains at Leeds – but surely, he could be a late departure.

Leeds have solved their issues up top in Joel Piroe, and a no.10 is set to join in the form of Nadiem Amiri. The club still need a left-back – and Bertrand is perfect, in getting a top-quality player in the door quick.

Romano has just delivered an update on Bertrand, who has left Leicester after two years. He is a free agent, after failing to play for the Foxes last year due to an op. Romano says he is back and has interest.

Leeds should look at freebie Bertrand as Romano delivers update

Of course, Bertrand is far from his best and having played 11 times over the last two years, he is going to need to take some time to get back up to speed. But, he is still young enough to rediscover that form.

A Champions League winner with 19 England caps, a player with 262 Premier League games under his belt and more than 100 in the Championship. Bertrand, on a free, might be worth the risk for Leeds.

If Firpo does go, Leeds would at least have options on the left of the defence if Bertrand does end up joining the club. If injury strikes again, we still have Byram and Dallas is returning. Surely, one to look at.
