Fabrizio Romano has told Caught Offside that Leeds United have no interest in cashing in on star Illan Meslier and are trying to “keep things quiet” regarding the Frenchman’s future at the club – with Tottenham and Newcastle keen.

Meslier, 23, became the youngest goalkeeper to reach 100 Premier League appearances on Saturday as he helped Leeds beat Wolves 4-2 at Molineux. A crucial win for the Whites that pushes us up into 14th place in the table.

But with relegation still a real possibility, going down to the Championship could see the club sell a number of star players. The likes of Meslier would come into that equation, with plenty of clubs showing interest in the Frenchman.

TeamTalk recently reported that Meslier is on Tottenham’s shortlist as they look to replace Hugo Lloris between the sticks. In January, French site RMC Sport said that Newcastle and Chelsea were also keeping tabs on the Leeds ace.

With Meslier boasting a contract at Leeds until June 2026, there is no pressure to sell. But relegation would surely see Meslier request an Elland Road exit. Romano states that Leeds do not want to sell and are keeping things quiet.

“Links between Meslier and a top club like Chelsea are normal. He’s a very talented goalkeeper. Many clubs have sent scouts to follow him. But at the moment, Leeds want to keep things quiet and not to open any negotiation now.”

Romano: Leeds keeping things quiet on Meslier with Tottenham keen

Leeds should be confident that if the club remain in the Premier League, which looks slightly more likely after the win at Wolves – then Meslier will remain. At least, Meslier will not be requesting to go with his deal lasting until 2026.

However, if Leeds fail to build on the win at Wolves and do go down – then which club is best for Meslier? Newcastle have one of the League’s best in Nick Pope and Meslier will not displace him. Chelsea do need a new goalkeeper.

But before they sign anyone, they will have to consider the futures of Kepa and Edouard Mendy. Ultimately, Meslier may struggle to break past those two as well. Tottenham would be Meslier’s best move, with Lloris likely to be sold.
