Ethan Ampadu has completed a move to Leeds United from Chelsea, signing a contract until the summer of 2027 with the option for a further year – and Leeds fans are in for a treat, if he lives up to comparisons with Rio Ferdinand.

Ampadu, 22, has spent the last four years out on loan from Chelsea. Struggling at Leipzig, improving at Sheffield United in the Premier League – the 44-time Wales star has impressed in Italy over the course of the last 24 months.

Despite relegation, he impressed at Venezia and Spezia – clocking up 60 Serie A appearances. Returning to Chelsea in the final year of his deal, Leeds have swooped. Leeds have paid an initial £7m, plus a possible £3m in add-ons.

It is likely that Ampadu will be used in midfield, either in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 system. But, he is more than adept at playing in defence, on the right side of central defence. Chris Coleman compared him to Ferdinand, back in 2017.

“His frame, athleticism and understanding of the game, he’s a great communicator for someone so young. His best position is a tough one to call. He could end up playing holding midfield or as a centre-back,” Coleman said in 2017.

“He’s got a long way to go before you can liken him to someone like Rio Ferdinand, but I remember him coming on at West Ham in midfield. Modern day centre-backs start play, has to be confident in possession. Ethan can do that.”

It is an excellent start for Leeds. But that is all it is, a start. Leeds have got so much work to do in sorting out the squad this summer – and hopefully, most of the work is done before the August 6 opener when Leeds host Cardiff.

A goalkeeper, a left-back, another midfielder, a no.10 and possibly a striker have got to be brought to the club. And, replacements for any other players should Leeds lose more than they already have. But Ampadu is a superb start.
