Leeds United remain top of the Championship table despite Sunday’s defeat to Portsmouth, but by the time Daniel Farke’s side are back in action – they could be down in third.

After wins against Sheffield United and Sunderland, Leeds have taken just one point from their last two games. A draw against West Brom which was solid enough, only to then be beaten by Portsmouth away.

With Sheffield United and Burnley both winning on Saturday, it meant defeat to Portsmouth saw Leeds lose their three-point advantage over Chris Wilder’s side. Wilder responded to Leeds defeat on Monday.

With two games coming in the next few days, this week promises to be an important period in the run-in. Leeds cannot afford to drop points again, with the pressure ramping up after defeat against Portsmouth.

Ethan Ampadu shares how the Leeds squad feel about run-in

With 10 games to go, Leeds will know that six or seven wins will get the job done. The last two results have come as a blow and Daniel Farke’s men need to start winning again in order to obtain promotion.

Ethan Ampadu has been talking to BBC Sport ahead of the next round of fixtures and he has shared the feeling among the Leeds squad, prior to Wednesday night’s game against Millwall at Elland Road.

“It’s the run-in. There’s three top teams at the minute that are all fighting for the same thing – four, if you want to include Sunderland as well. But for us, we’ve got full confidence in what we can achieve.

“We’re fighting to be at the top of the league. I don’t know who wouldn’t enjoy that. It’d be silly not to. And whilst we’re in it, we’re going to try and enjoy every moment of it,” Ampadu said on BBC Sport.

Why Leeds will still be confident of securing automatic promotion

Defeat to Portsmouth was a blow, but Leeds should still be confident of winning a place in the top two. One element is that Leeds will only play two sides in the top half of the table in the next 10 matches.

Leeds also have the benefit of not having to play Sheffield United or Burnley in the remaining games. The two teams however, face each other in the third-last game of the season and that will see points dropped.

But what is crucial for Leeds is that they get back to winning games and put a run together, to alleviate any concern of another implosion that saw Leeds win just 14 points from the last 10 games, last season.
