Dominic Matteo has told LUTV he thinks Georginio Rutter is “getting better and better” in a Leeds United shirt this season after a difficult start, and is actually starting to improve his teammates.

Rutter, 21, has had a hand in seven goals in his 13 Championship outings this season. But it is Rutter’s ability to drop deep, win the ball back and start attacks. He leads the way in chances created, too.

The French talent is on fire and one of the first names on the team sheet right now – along with the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, Sam Byram and Cree Summerville. He will start again on Friday night.

Leeds need Rutter to be at his absolute best on Friday night as we prepare for what will be our toughest game of the season – an away trip to the King Power. Leicester have been on fire, winning 13 of 14.

Ex-Leeds defender Matteo gave his take on Rutter after another wonderful display on Saturday during our 4-1 win over Huddersfield. He thinks Rutter is improving, and is actually improving his teammates.

“Rutter was absolutely outstanding [on Saturday]. Seems to be getting better, and better and better. He has this way about him where you think you’re going to get the ball off of him, and he just uses his body.

“His shape the way he moves, makes it so difficult for defenders. He was the one for me, absolutely outstanding. Long may that continue, and I think the other lads are feeding off of that as well.”

Dominic Matteo says Georginio Rutter is getting better for Leeds

It was a tricky start for Rutter. Unable to speak English when he arrived in January, Rutter joined a Leeds side that were embroiled in a relegation scrap. Constantly changing managers. Everything against him.

Leeds wanted and needed a striker that hit the ground running. Rutter was not that man – but more, one for the future. But, maybe he needed relegation to go and get the best out of him. Confidence restored.

Either way, that is now in the past. He is forefronting our push for promotion, the attacking spearhead in a Leeds side that are focusing on the final third just as much as the defensive third. Big game tonight.
