Djed Spence was seen applauding Archie Gray in the early stages of the second-half of Leeds United’s clash with Swansea City on Wednesday, after the 17-year-old went on a little run into the visitors’ box.

That is according to Leeds Live, which notes that the substitute threw his head back when Gray was dispossessed just before potentially getting a shot away.

Archie Gray had another brilliant game for Leeds on Wednesday. The Whites came from 1-0 down inside the first minute to beat the Swans 3-1 at Elland Road and continue to put pressure on the Championship’s top two.

Like many others, Gray did not have his best evening against Rotherham United last week. And with Luke Ayling in the ranks and Djed Spence edging closer to being fully fit again, some may have wondered whether Daniel Farke would make a change.

However, Farke stuck with Gray against Swansea. Spence meanwhile, took a place on the bench as he gets closer to returning.

Spence however, was not needed against Swansea. And that was down to Gray being absolutely superb. He looked a natural at right-back. And at one stage, he had his own rival applauding his work.

According to Leeds Live, Gray’s 53rd minute slalom into the box was applauded by Spence, who was warming up on the side. The teenager almost did brilliantly to dance through a couple of challenges. And Leeds fans would have been hoping that he would create the yard of space to be able to get a shot away.

Spence reportedly seemed as disappointed as anyone that the chance broke down, with Gray penalised for a foul just after.

Pressure now off Tottenham loanee

If Leeds fans needed any convincing that we have a special talent on our hands in Gray, his form at right-back surely deals with that.

At 17, he should be finding things challenging in his preferred position – and not breezing through games in a completely different and unfamiliar role.

His form is taking the pressure off of Spence. The Tottenham loanee can focus on returning at the right time. And he does not need to be rushed back.

But if Spence thought he was going to have it easy getting his place in the team, he was very much mistaken.
