New Leeds signing mooted as Daniel Farke told he’s been playing player in wrong position all season

There are a couple of areas of this Leeds United squad that are likely to be monitored over the next few weeks with Daniel Farke’s side constantly linked with a number of new signings.

But Daniel Farke is renowned for being methodical in the transfer window. Last January, he made only one signing in the form of Connor Roberts and while he improved Leeds, the Whites often lacked depth.

This time around, Leeds may need a new left-back and certainly, competition for Brenden Aaronson. It might also be that The Whites are forced into replacing a couple of current players, if some do depart.

But if Leeds are to do business, you would expect it to be in the 10 role with The Whites likely to try and find a replacement or competition for playmaker Aaronson. Graham Smyth expects Leeds to sign a 10.

Aaronson has enjoyed a good spell of form of late, with the USA star having a hand in eight goals during 2024-25. He is clearly fancied by boss Farke, who has started him in every game apart from the first two.

That is despite Aaronson racking up the air miles, playing for his country. On Boxing Day, he created Joel Piroe’s first goal and while it is not technically his assist, it was as good as his pass that led to the goal.

Former Leeds star Jon Newsome, though, told BBC Radio Leeds: “It’s not his position, he’s not a 10. Round pegs in square holes. I fully expect the football club to try bring one in in January. I really do,” he added.

Currently in the Championship’s top 20 players for goals and assists, there are three Leeds players. Piroe’s brace has taken him to 13 goals and assists for the season, scoring nine of his own for the Yorkshire side.

Wilfried Gnonto has nine goals and assists but of late, the Italy star has dropped out of the starting line-up at Elland Road. Down in 17th, is Aaronson with eight – though, he has an XG+A of 10.0 this season.

Aaronson should have scored a few more, and possibly had his teammates put the ball in the back of the net, he might have a few more assists. But while Farke trusts him, so should Leeds fans ahead of Derby.
