Crysencio Summerville has offered his reaction to Leeds United’s win over Sheffield United ahead of West Ham’s trip to Tottenham.
The Whites ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over their Yorkshire rivals at Elland Road with Summerville still seemingly keeping an eye on his old team.
Pascal Struijk and Mateo Joseph were both on the scoresheet for Leeds, with the former finally ending the long wait for a league goal from a corner.
Struijk steered in a well crafted cross from Joe Rothwell to put Leeds into a deserved lead just over 20 minutes before the end.
Joseph then sealed the win late on from the bench with his second goal of the season, in what should be a huge boost to his confidence after his hattrick for Spain U21s last week.
Summerville and Firpo react to Pascal Struijk’s goal for Leeds
Struijk could quite easily have been on more than just the one goal prior to last night’s win against the Blades.
Alongside a missed penalty at Cardiff City, Struijk has also missed a couple of good opportunities from set-pieces, with his finish on the half-volley yesterday arguably the most difficult yet.
Having watched Brenden Aaronson blaze a similar kind of opportunity over the bar minutes earlier, Struijk kept his composure to power one past a really impressive ‘keeper in Michael Cooper.
Struijk was also his usual rock solid self at the other end and donning the armband once again in Ethan Ampadu’s absence, posted on Instagram after the game.
He wrote: “Secured the points at Elland Road.”
Summerville and Junior Firpo were among several of Struijk’s teammates past and present to respond in the comments, with it now clear to everyone just what a crucial part of this team he is.
Daniel Farke says Struijk is the ‘heart’ of Leeds
Though Leeds have been lacking from set-pieces early on this season, their lack of goals from such situations stemmed from when Struijk got injured.
Due to the record of Ampadu and Joe Rodon together, his importance to the team perhaps became a little understated.
However, Farke certainly isn’t of that opinion, telling his post-match press conference both Struijk and Rodon are the ‘heart’ of the team.
He said: “They are the heart of our motor and send the message from the first pass of an attack. Their choice of pass tonight was crucial. Rothwell and Tanaka had many good decisions. Cannot be perfect, but their feeling for the right pass was crucial.”
