Cost of Leeds United starting XI 2022 vs 2023, almost £100 million difference

Leeds United have seen a huge amount of turnover to their squad this summer.

In the wake of relegation, Leeds saw 16 players depart, 14 of which were members of last season’s first team squad as they made use of the ridiculous loan clauses inserted into their contracts.

Of Victor Orta’s seven first team signings last summer, only Wilfried Gnonto still remains at the club, showing just how poor that transfer window was for Leeds.

In order to replace those who have left, Leeds made nine signings during the first window under the ownership of San Francisco 49ers Enterprises.

So, with that in mind, here is a comparison of the cost of each starting XI. Note all transfer fees are excluding add-ons.

Difference: £94.95 million

For there to be an almost £100 million difference considering the quality of each starting XI is pretty remarkable and so fair play to the 49ers, Nick Hammond and co.

You could genuinely argue that the Championship XI is better than the one that took to the Premier League most weeks, with this season’s defence notably stronger on paper than last term.

This year’s starting XI could’ve been even less had Archie Gray been included over Glen Kamara, though after joining from Rangers for £5 million, he has not come to sit on the bench.

Ethan Ampadu at less than both Marc Roca and Tyler Adams also looks like an incredible piece of business given how he has settled into life at Elland Road.

Aside from Georginio Rutter, each and every one of the players in the Championship XI has been picked up for incredible, which cannot be said for the Premier League one. Good work Leeds.
