Mateusz Klich is one of several of Kalvin Phillips’ former Leeds United teammates to congratulate him on scoring his first England goal on Monday night.
Klich was responding to Phillips’ post on Instagram after he netted the Three Lions’ sixth goal in a 7-0 rout of Ezgjan Alioski’s North Macedonia, having come off the bench for the final half an hour.
Phillips latched onto a loose ball inside the penalty area with goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski in no mans land, passing home into an empty net in front of a sold out Old Trafford crowd.
His appearance yesterday was the 27th for his country, finally breaking his goal scoring duck and writing on Instagram after the game, he described it as an ‘honour’.
He wrote: “An honour to get my first goal for England, a moment I’ll never forget. Unreal performance from all the boys.”
Klich among Phillips’ old Leeds teammates to respond
In typical Klich fashion, his congratulatory message to his former Leeds midfield partner contained a hint of sarcasm.
The Pole was just one of a number of his old teammates to send him a message, with Crysencio Summerville, Sam Greenwood, Adam Forshaw and Luke Ayling also among them.
Forshaw and Ayling were apart of Leeds’ promotion squad of 2020 alongside Phillips, while Summerville and Greenwood looked up to the midfielder as someone they could emulate during their time in the U21s.

Even though he is no longer at the club, it was a great moment for onlooking Leeds supporters to see Phillips net his first international goal.
In his early days as a professional player, he never looked as if he would get close to this sort of level but his development at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa was there for all to see.
It is good to see several of his former teammates send him a message of congratulations.
