Southampton have completed the signing of Manchester City defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis on a loan-to-buy deal – amid reports earlier this month that Leeds United wanted to sign the England U21 captain.
Harwood-Bellis starred for Burnley last season in their promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. The 21-year-old was superb under Vincent Kompany – but since returned to his parent club.
At this late stage, he has been unable to remain with Burnley – or stay in the Premier League. Indeed, he has gone to promotion rivals Southampton. The Saints confirmed the loan deal on Friday morning.
Sky Sports Transfer Centre gave a bit of inside information of their own following the arrival of Harwood-Bellis at Southampton. They claim that a £20m clause has been included in the loan, from Man City.
It comes after Telegraph reporter John Percy claimed earlier this summer, in the middle of August, that the defender was also a target for Leeds. It is a huge signal of intent from Southampton on deadline day.

What a signing for Southampton. Leeds have of course brought in Joe Rodon, and Charlie Cresswell is cover for the Wales international. On the left, Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper are competing to start.
So, Leeds are well-stocked at centre-back and the arrival of Rodon has helped Leeds in that position. But, Harwood-Bellis would have been a wonderful signing regardless. It certainly bolsters the Saints.
Leeds are expected to be busy today. Plenty of players could leave the club – with Cody Drameh set to go to Birmingham City. Luis Sinisterra and Willy Gnonto continue to be linked with moves to Everton.
