Patrick Bamford got his name on the score sheet for Sheffield United on Tuesday night, in what was his first competitive start for the Blades since leaving Leeds United on a free.

After eight years at Elland Road, Daniel Farke brutally informed Bamford that he was no longer part of his plans at Leeds moving forward. Bamford had failed to score a single goal for Leeds during 2024-25.

Now the dust has settled on Patrick Bamford’s move to Sheffield United… was Daniel Farke wrong to AXE him?

Even if he did score against Middlesbrough, the goal was wrongly ruled out for offside. Six weeks after being told he was not a part of Farke’s plans, Bamford then mutually terminated his Leeds contract.

Links with the MLS, other Championship clubs, La Liga side Getafe and Scottish champions Celtic have followed, before Bamford was training with Coventry. Then, during the break, Bamford joined the Blades.

Bamford scores first goal in more than 18 months on Wednesday

The one-time England man’s last goal came against Middlesbrough at the end of the 2023-24 season, in a 4-3 win over Middlesbrough. On Wednesday, Bamford started for Sheffield United against Portsmouth.

Having flashed a 25-yard effort wide in the first half, Bamford then netted from close range after a header from a corner hit the bar. Arguably the scruffiest goal Bamford will score throughout his entire career.

Yet, Bamford finally ended a goal drought stretching 19 months in what was his first start for Sheffield United. Coincidentally, it was Bamford’s 70th Championship goal in his 219th second-tier appearance.

Chris Wilder shares details on Patrick Bamford’s Blades contract

Given Bamford scored, after an impressive cameo against Sheffield Wednesday on the weekend, Blades fans are already calling for Bamford to be given an extended deal. He has signed on until January.

Speaking after the game as per The Star, Wilder said: “He’s been brilliant to work with. We’ve talked about the no.9 situation at length. I’d obviously like to work with Pat a lot longer, so we’ll see where that goes.”

As Bamford rediscovers his shooting boots, Leeds remain poor in the final third after a fifth defeat in six Premier League games on Sunday, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa. Man City is up next for Bamford’s old side.
