Chris Wilder responds when asked if Sheffield United can still finish above Leeds United

Monday night’s incredible comeback win saw Leeds United stretch their lead at the top of the League table to five points over Sheffield United with 12 Championship games left to play.

Having come from behind to beat fourth-placed Sunderland last Monday, Leeds did exactly the same at Bramall Lane a week later. Illan Meslier was shaky in the first 20 minutes and conceded an own goal.

But Leeds grew into the game and eventually got an equaliser when Dan James crossed for Junior Firpo to score. A second came in the final minutes of normal time, Joe Rothwell playing a crucial part again.

Rothwell’s corner was flicked on by Pascal Struijk and Ao Tanaka popped up to head home his third goal of the season. Joel Piroe rounded off the win with a stunner from 25 yards to secure a massive 3-1 win.

Chris Wilder asked if Sheffield United can still catch Leeds United

The gap is now five points between first and second with 12 Championship games to go, but perhaps more importantly, Leeds are seven ahead of Burnley. The magical 90-point mark is just five wins away.

Daniel Farke has been here before and done it, winning the Championship on two occasions before he joined Leeds. But speaking to Sheffield United’s YouTube, Wilder said Sheffield United can catch Leeds.

“Dan[iel Farke] has said it, I’ve said it, Scott Parker has said it and the Sunderland manager has said it. There’s a lot of football to be played,” Wilder said, when asked if Sheffield United can reel Leeds back in.

“Nothing gets decided tonight, they’ve put themselves in a fabulous position of course. If we would have got a win, we would have the same thing. The attitude is not to chase them down, but to win the next.”

How the Championship table looks as Leeds beat Sheffield United

For those of a Leeds persuasion, it’s looking good. Leeds are now 16 games unbeaten, last losing back in November when John Eustace proved to be Farke’s nemesis once again as Blackburn secured a 1-0 win.

Leeds are a steam train, showing no signs of slowing down even if they concede the first goal against the best sides in the division. Now five clear, Leeds have a quick turnaround before hosting West Brom.

Sheffield United go to an in-form QPR on Saturday, while Burnley will be looking to continue their run of clean sheets in Wales away at Cardiff. Sunderland go to Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.
