Newcastle United are reportedly close to signing Chelsea star Lewis Hall and such a move has got to convince Leeds United to bring in Toon left-back Matt Targett – a player Jesse Marsch wanted in 2022.
The Chronicle, among many other sites, claim 18-year-old Hall is in advanced talks to complete a £30m move to Newcastle from Chelsea. Dan Ashworth is said to have been keen to bring in a new left-back.
It sees Dan Burn become second choice on Tyneside, while 27-year-old Targett has been pushed even further down the pecking order. The ex-Villa man has only been on Tyneside for 18 months since joining.
He joined initially on loan – a signing made by Nick Hammond in January 2022. He played an important role for Newcastle, in keeping them in the Premier League and finishing strongly – playing 16 matches.
Signed permanently for £15m, he has since only managed 19 more games during 2022-23. Hall’s arrival only reduces his game time. He needs a move, and Hammond should sign Targett for a second time.
Leeds have been after a left-back for some time. Junior Firpo remains injured but could leave the club at the end of the window. He is not wanted. Leo Hjelde is being strongly linked with a move to Salernitana.
Newcastle close to signing Hall: Leeds should move for Targett
Sam Byram has come in but is right-footed and Stuart Dallas is approaching 18 months without playing a single match. Leeds need a left-back and Targett would be perfect. Hall’s move gives us a chance.
Back in the summer of 2022, 90Min said Leeds and Marsch wanted Targett. After a season of playing little, his value will have gone down. The perfect left-back signing, if we can convince him to join.
Targett will fancy himself as a Premier League left-back, having played 159 games in the top tier – and only 18 in the Championship. But he would finally solve out left-back dilemma. One for Leeds to look at.
