Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has claimed on Twitter that Chelsea have activated the £20m release clause of Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams – and a medical could take place in the next 24 hours for the USA skipper.
Adams, 24, has spent just a season at Elland Road – having joined for a slightly smaller fee from RB Leipzig under Jesse Marsch. A move that saw Adams reunite with Marsch, working under him at New York Red Bulls and Leipzig.
The midfielder starred for Leeds. But after undergoing a hamstring operation, Adams failed to play again for the rest of the season. In turn, Leeds went down. Numerous pundits and fans say if he was fit, Leeds may have stayed up.
Following relegation, numerous players have left on loan – with clubs allowed to sign Leeds players temporarily if 100% of wages are paid. A relegation clause, we can thank Victor Orta for. Only Rodrigo has left for a decent fee.
Even that was only supposedly around £3m, to Al-Rayyan. But now, it looks as if Leeds could finally get their hands on some cash – in the form of Adams. Sheth reports Chelsea have activated his clause. A medical could be soon.

A bargain for Chelsea, but also some much-needed cash for Leeds. It gives the 49ers the power to actually spend, an issue not due to a lack of funds – but because of Financial Fairplay. Leeds need to sell before being able to buy.
