Coventry City have seen a £2.5 million bid rejected by Barnsley for former Leeds United defender Liam Kitching.

That is according to the Barnsley Chronicle, who report the Reds have a higher valuation for him than Coventry’s initial offer having signed a new deal only last season.

Kitching was made captain at Oakwell last week but as per the report, is said to be keen to test himself at a higher level with Coventry set to push for promotion alongside his former club Leeds this term.

The Sky Blues are among the favourites to finish in the top six again after coming within a penalty shootout away of the Premier League in May.

Despite having lost Viktor Gyokeres, Coventry look to have one of the strongest squads in the division after spending heavily on a number of players, including Ellis Simms and Milan van Ewijk.

Kitching is a product of Leeds’ academy but never made a senior appearance for the Whites before being sold to Forest Green Rovers in 2019 by Marcelo Bielsa.

The 23-year-old enjoyed an impressive time at Forest Green and so was promptly snapped up by Barnsley 18 months later.

Since moving to South Yorkshire, Kitching has gone from strength-to-strength and has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in League One in recent years.

He has made 90 appearances in total for Barnsley, scoring five goals and providing a further five assists, some decent numbers for a central defender.

Should he be granted a move to Coventry, he could come up against his former club Leeds for the first time in his career.
