A handful of Leeds United’s Championship opponents were in action on Tuesday night after some were in FA Cup action over the weekend, with Hull City securing three points.

Hull were forced to wait until Tuesday night to take on Plymouth Argyle with the relegation-threatened side facing Manchester City in The FA Cup on the weekend. Gelhardt played a crucial role in Hull’s win.

A 2-0 victory that saw Ruben Selles’ side pick up a third win in seven games, and inch away from the relegation zone. Gelhardt was excellent in the Hull win, scoring his second goal since joining the club.

Gelhardt joined Hull on loan in January after a lack of game time under Daniel Farke and scored his first with a stunning goal during a 2-1 defeat to QPR. On Tuesday night, he notched his second goal of the season.

Hull scored a second goal through Abu Kamara, the man who netted a brace against Leeds during the 3-3 draw in January. Gelhardt had been operating out wide but on Tuesday night, was given a central role.

The former Wigan man linked up well with Brazilian striker Joao Pedro and it proved enough to get over the line against a relegation rival in Plymouth. Hull fans responded by saying they want him signed.

Hull fans were delighted on social media following the win, with one describing Gelhardt’s display as “really impressive”. Another said Pedro and Gelhardt worked “perfectly together” in Hull’s final third.

Pedro of course, was the other goalscorer against Leeds when Meslier dropped the ball at his feet and allowed the former Fenerbahce man to tap home. Another praised the “instincts” of Gelhardt last night.

It is clear that Hull fans want Gelhardt signed with another simply posting on X: “Buy Gelhardt”. Another fan said the Leeds-owned star “looked quality” against a Plymouth side that managed to beat Liverpool.

What Hull media said about Joe Gelhardt after Plymouth win

Gelhardt had been playing out wide under Selles but was given a go in his more natural role on Tuesday night and it proved to be effective, even if the Hull Daily Mail actually said Gelhardt “found it tough”.

That is despite the HDM handing Gelhardt a rating of 8.5, praising the Leeds star’s skill inside the box and his sharp finishing when the ball dropped to him 10 yards out with only the Plymouth goalkeeper to beat.

“Slight change to his usual position, playing more centrally. Found it tough aside from one clever moment of skill which saw him go down inside the box. Took his goal really well with a sharp first-time finish.”

Whether the attacker has a future at Elland Road remains to be seen but this is the second time Gelhardt has left Leeds on loan after a half-season spell at Sunderland in 2023. The chances are, Gelhardt could go.
